Hardy perennial of the meadows and pastures between 800 and 2500 m of which one uses the dried roots.

Gentian is a powerful digestive stimulant, opens the appetite, facilitates digestion, it is also a tonic which will helps convalescence. Disadvised to pregnant women and in case of hypertension.
Also : Asthenia, convulsions, fever, parasitic disease.


Maceration of 3 g of dried root for one boiling cup of water, let macerate 3 hours, one cup after each meal.

Gentian wine : Let macerate 20 to 40 g of roots during one week in one liter of white wine. (One can add rosemary, sage and green anise), filter. One glass before meal to open the appetite or one glass after the meal to facilitate digestion.

Infusion : One spoonful of roots for one boiling cup of water, let infuse 10 minutes ; one cup before meals.

Syrup : Let macerate 24 hours, 8 to 10 g of roots in 1 liter of water, filter, add 1 kg of sugar. One small liquor glass three times a day as a tonic for the children.
